Master Digital Color Talent Search 2010 – Part 1: Tommy Patterson

Tribal Council — By on June 15, 2010 1:16 AM

Its that time of year again folks!! Where every nerd in the world (who can find and/or afford a hotel room) congregates in San Diego, California for the annual worship of all things comic books, art, pop culture and geekdom in general.  Hundreds of thousands of voracious fans pour into the San Diego Convention Center to meet and greet their idols from the comic book, gaming, film and so much more.  Haven’t had the opportunity to join the mania? Well…neither have I. But here’s your chance to get, at the very least, some of your artwork featured at the show.  It’s time now to debut the Welcome to the Master Digital Color Talent Search 2010, sponsored by Hi-Fi Colour Design & HueDoo.com.  What is that you ask??  Let me tell you.

The trading cards available at the Impact Books Booth, World Famous Comics Booth and anywhere else Hi-Fi makes appearances at SDCC. Thousands of fans could be collecting trading cards with your color work!

• The winning artwork will be featured on HueDoo.com, and in a feature story on MasterDigitalColor.com and HiFiDesign.com

• The winning artwork will be featured on the big screen at Hi-Fi’s how-to color panels at the San Diego Comic-Con INternational.

The deadline for all colored pieces is Wednesday June 30, 2010 at 11:59 pm Central. Entrants are free to enter as many or as few of the 4 categories as they would like. The judging panel will consist of representatives from Hi-Fi, HueDoo, and Master Digital Color plus the creative teams behind the line art in each category. Winners will be announced one July 14, 2010.

We’re also featuring each of the artists over the next couple weeks here in the Tribal Council.  These artists and creative teams are phenomenal and I can’t wait for you to get to know them and their work a bit more.  Our first guest is a good friend that you may remember from the Hulktastic HiFi Coloring Challenge #16. If you thought his Hulk was awesome…you HAVE to check out his Red Sonja (no really…just scroll down a couple of lines…it’s right there).  Tommy also took a few seconds to catch us us up on what he’s been working on lately.

Tribal Council: My first question is always ‘what’s your favorite color?’ but since this is your second interview…you’ve already answered that. So…the back up question is:  What is your LEAST favorite color?

Tommy Patterson: Off GeekyWhite.
TC: Har-Dee-Har. Your last Coloring Challenge was an amazing drawing of the Hulk. The readers may not know how much of a fan you are of the big green.  Tell us about that.
TP: I was put here on this Earth to do a number of things. One of them is to draw the Hulk. No real reason why I like him I just do. Love the colors love the shape of the Hulk. You can do so much AND have fun with him every time.
TC: When we last spoke with you back for Coloring Challenge #16 you were working on Farscape. What’s been going on with you since then?
TP: Been doing misc. books for Zenescope and man is this stuff fun to draw. Very visual. Tales of the White Knight, Stingers and Red Rose.
TC: This time around we’ve got an unbelievable Red Sonja that you’ve drawn.  Tell us a little about your process on this one.
TP: This was a pure grip and rip. I was just focusing on drawing a sexy female. It turned out to be one of my better drawings. Just trying to have fun. Have fun have success.
TC: I’ve been watching a lot of artists streaming their work on the internet. One of them is you.  What’s that like working with the eyes of the world on you?
TP: I love it. It keeps my pencil moving. Once you draw under deadline pressure everything else is EZ. I love telling wild stories and people seem to enjoy listening as much as watching.
TC: While streaming your work I’ve noticed that you explain your process and how you’re solving problems on the page.  I feel like it’s a lot like an educational experience. That’s something that I personally really appreciate.  Is educating something that you intentionally set about to do in your streams or is that something that just comes naturally to you?
TP: In college I took a semester and had a few teaching classes. I loved it but I didn’t feel like the extra year it would have taken to get the degree. I am a people person and I like to have fun and chat.
TC: Buckling down and actively pursuing a career in the arts every day is hard. SO many super talented people can’t commit to that and waste a LOT of their potential. Do you have any insight you could share on what keeps you motivated and at the drawing table?
TP: You have to systematically remove distractions from your life. You also have to learn to feed your creativity. Channel everything into your particular passion. I got rid of my Xbox. I was too competitive to stop playing Halo. All and I mean ALL motivational speakers have one real message. Just do it. It’s all in your hands. Don’t be a slave to anything BUT your end goal. One final trick is to work early, before your dayjob drains the life out of you.

There you have it folks. HUGE thanks for Tommy Patterson for not only allowing us to color this amazing piece for the talent search but also for the time to speak with us. Now you need to get over to HueDoo.com right now and start coloring and reposting those images. Not a colorist? That’s ok too!  I encourage EVERYONE to check out the images, sign up as a member on the forums (it’s absolutely free and only takes a second) then let us know what you think.  If there’s one thing an artists likes…it’s feedback. Good OR not-as-good. Also look for interviews with all the creators (Bruce McCorkindale, Tracie Mauk, Tyler James, Ty Tyner and Matt Zolman) coming up this week and next.

This is a great ink job. It looks like is was done digitally and if it was, I like the way it turned out. Especially Red Sonja, she looks great. I like the type of outline in the subject matter, it helps separate the BG from the FG and lets the middle ground pop alittle…Notice how the contour line gets thinner as you move into the BG….pretty cool. The digital techniques are getting better and better by alot of artists. Thats good to see. As far as the BG is concerned, from front to back it goes, water, rock and trees, and sky.
Overall,….Well done!!!Cant wait to try this!!!
