Phoenix Comicon
Inside the Studio — By Kristy Miller on May 26, 2010 at 10:16 PMThis weekend is our local convention, the Phoenix Comic Con, which used to be known as Cactus Con. It started several years ago as a small, local group of fans getting people together. It was truly a grassroots effort.
A few years ago it moved to the other side of the valley into a bigger location & soon they got so big and popular that they had to move again. This year they are in the big Phoenix Convention Center in downtown Phoenix. Cactus Con has hit the big-time!
Guests started out as whoever was local then moved to a few outsiders and now Stan freakin’ Lee is coming on Sunday! A huge amount of stars are coming from all genres. I think one of the things that makes this convention so big and so popular is the fact that it is so diverse. They have a lot of cosplay, anime, voice actors, as well as Star Trek, Star Wars, (& one of my favorite) the local guys that dress up like the Ghostbusters–they even have the car(!) and various TV show stars & then the comic legends.
One of the main draws for this con was coming to Phoenix in January. I mean if you live in NYC or Iowa who wouldn’t want to come to Phoenix where it is a balmy 70 degrees and sunny in January. But since the Con got so big they had to move to a big venue and with the move came the condition that they had to start out in May, then if all goes well, they can move it back to a winter date.
Based on the coverage it’s getting, the people attending, and the panels, movies, etc. that are going on it seems like it’s just going to get bigger and bigger.
So if you have a minute come on down to the Phoenix Comic Con, if you are far away make plans for next year, it’s a hellava lot cheaper than San Diego, and in my opinion, much nicer weather.

PS. Hi-Fi are guests this year and have a booth at T50. We are also doing panels on Saturday at 430 and Sunday at Noon. Our super fun swag just arrived as well, I’m wearing mine proudly right now… interested? Stop by our booth and say hello.
