Let’s All Go To The Movies

I hate the movies these days.  Ok, let me restate I love the movies, I hate GOING to the movies.  Could someone please explain to me why we pay $9 to listen to kids scream and people eat every food substance known to man.  Can we not make it through a two hour movie without peanuts, popcorn, sunflower seeds, soda, M&M’s, Twizzlers, nacho’s and even pizza!?!  Seriously, eat before you come!  It wouldn’t be so bad but the smell is usually terrible and I’m pretty sure the movie people hire someone to come up with the noisiest possible food wrappers.  I never pay attention to someone opening a bag of Gummy Bears but when in the theater it’s like a nuclear devise–they should use that for the Dolby commercials!

And another thing… turn off your phones!  Yes I said OFF not vibrate.  They make it dark for a reason, but when you get a text (every two & a half seconds) your screen lights up and so does the whole row.  What the hell could be so important that it can’t wait for the credits.  And don’t even think about answering a call, I will be the person who turns around and tells you to walk your lazy butt outside.

Back to the screaming kids thing, this also applies to people saying the following things: “what did he say?” “who is that?” “look he’s got a kitty” “mommy what does that mean?”  Watch the movie and shut up!  If you are not old enough or smart enough to know what is going on keep it to yourself and google it later (NOT in the theater!)

I know, I know I’m sounding very curmudgeon-like but come on.  It’s Ironman for pete’s sake not rocket science.  (Ok there is a little rocket science but your not supposed to know what it all means.)

[Deep breath]

Brian & I saw Ironman 2 the other day at the theater. I’m pretty sure I liked it but I’ll know better when I can enjoy it without interruption in the comfort of my own home.  It won’t be the same as it was on the big screen with the loud music and huge picture but at least it will be less annoying.

Have we, as a society, lost all sense of manners?  When I was a kid I was told to sit down and shut up and watch… and I LOVED the movies.  I would save up all my money to go, I remember the movies costing $2.95 and having a cow when they went up to $3.50. According to my mom the first movie I saw was The Jungle Book and I hung on the edge of my seat laughing and crying throughout the whole thing.  Is it too much to ask that everyone get to enjoy a NINE DOLLAR movie as much as that?

Wow I do sound old, and bitter, and pretty cranky… I’d better leave it for now, I’ll tell you all about Ironman and my thoughts on comics in movies another day.  I need an aspirin.

Lol nice rant and I do agree with the kids screaming in the theater. I will admit I do tend to check my phone while sitting in there during the movie.

During my Iron Man 2 experience I had a bag full of M&M’s or some assorted candy hit my head and back. I also actually mentioned to a friend of mine that it seems like people are used to people being on their phones all the time, it has become less of a distraction. Personally, I turn my phone on silent and leave it in the purse once the previews start. Least you didn’t have guys drinking beer in the aisle behind you either. That was the worst movie experience I have ever had.

I think people no longer feel embarrassment or shame and without those feelings they simply are not motivated to be considerate of others.

With Facebook and Twitter being so popular we have a society where we each broadcast our every thought and movement and believe everything we do to be of great interest to everyone around us. We’re are so focused on our individual importance we have forgot, or worse, no longer care what effect our actions have on others. Be it belittling someone online for their beliefs and viewpoints or the annoyance of making noise in a movie theater.

Maybe it is time we remember the whole point of social networking is forming relationships with real people and put the “civil” back in civilization.

yeah the movie experience has chance especially for me ever since star wars episode 1 the phantom menace. so once aging we can thank george lucas for ruining the movie experience of todays generation.

Precisely why I bought a digital projector.

Oh my gosh, finally, someone is talking some sense! I’ve been saying stuff like this for years but the general public looks at me like I’m the rude one.

I try to keep my kids quiet and I usually put my phone on silent or vibrate. I may look to see who it is in case I have to step out and take the call since my cell phone is my business phone, but for the most part I ignore it and will get the call later. But I think that society in general has become less considerate of othersor ignoring common courtesies, not even saying please when ordering food and thank you when it it served, stuff like that, holding the door open if someone is behind you, etc.

I agree $9 is quite a bit to pay to have your movie be ruined by people with no manners. Unfortunately my husband and I do not get to experience this much unless we include our son which means we are going to see a movie we probably don’t want to see anyway. It makes me wonder though, with the digital age upon us if the traditional movie theatre will become obsolete along with CDs & physical copies of books and newspapers. I wonder if they will start to release movies directly to your television. I wonder how much those people paid to ruin Iron Man for you guys. Let’s face it movie theater snack prices are outrageous. Also with the astronomical prices of a movie ticket and snacks you would think that they could afford to hire more staff to keep the theaters clean. Have you ever noticed what it looks like when the credits role and the lights come on?
