The Brightest Page!

Brightest Day #0 comes out in stories across the country today, and I wanted to share yet another great example of the kind of work we do right here in DC Comics’ Pre-Press department.  For this particular issue, I had to create put together a page from a bunch of different pieces of artwork all sent in by different artists at different times.

For page 44 of Brightest Day #1, the story called for a JAM piece to be done by 11 different artists.  The page called for Deadman to have a flash-forward and see a bunch of visions.  Each artist drew the characters and book they work on, and all of them were to be integrated into a flattened finished page to be colored.  After I received all of the different pieces, I had to combine them all and make them into one page.  I used layers in Photoshop to place each image where the editor wanted them placed inside these lightning streaks coming off of Deadman who was to be the centerpiece.  I had to re-size just about every piece to make it fit in the area needed, and of coarse add and delete some art to fit.

Nothing fit exactly as planned, so it took all day to get each piece to be incorporated into the finished piece.  Below is all the patches I received and then the completed page all put together.  And the last image is the final colored piece by the AMAZING Peter Steigerwald!

Don’t forget though; after seeing this little behind-the-scenes construction of this HUGE Jam page by 11 different artists, and how we made it all fit onto one page, be sure to go out to your local comic shop and purchase Brightest Day #0!  It’s a GREAT issue and sets the stage for whats to come across the DC Universe for a long time to come.  Great story, great art, and great production ( :-D ) make this a MUST buy!  Hope you enjoy a peak behind the curtain on what is sure to be a best seller, Brightest Day #0!

Now I had to put ALL these separate pieces together with the main image to create ONE full comic page including all of them where the editor wanted them to go.  I did this all in layers, and had to add/ delete art all around so every piece would fit flawlessly within the lightning around Deadman.
