If I Had A Hammer
Screen Gems — By AltoidMan on March 30, 2010 7:27 PMWe all have been placed in positions that were impossible. Perhaps a spouse or a lover asks us one of “those” questions which have no good answer. Perhaps a parent or close friend politely accuses us of something. Even if we didn’t do anything there may be no way to prove we didn’t do it based on what we DID do. Oh, high school was fun.
I think Chris Hemsworth recently had this same kind of moment. In fact, I’m going to bet he had this moment when he was recently cornered at a movie premiere and asked about the Thor movie. Hemsworth’s brother, Liam, is the now-famous boyfriend of Miley Cyrus. They just did a film together and now have decided to do each other. Where this becomes relevant in the world of comics (which, for the record, is likely the ONLY way Cyrus will be relevant in the world of comics) is that Chris recently attended the premiere of his brother’s movie, The Last Song, and was asked about Thor. Here is an excerpt of the interview.
“I have the hammer, it’s pretty true to the comics. I have a long blond wig and a nice big red cape and all sorts of armor and interesting bits and pieces.”
“There’s so many different versions of the comic books, they’ve sort of bonded quite a few of them to form this particular story, but it’s all very true to the original stuff,”
“We started in January, and we’re three quarters of the way through at the moment and it’s going really well.”
Let me do my best to break this down. “I have a hammer, it’s pretty true to the comics.” Um, Chris, having a hammer is only one aspect of the comic book. I could walk around with a hammer all day and be no closer to being Thor than you.
“I have a long blond wig and a nice, big, red cape and all sorts of armor and interesting bits and pieces.” Translation: I have some cool ass toys to play with! Ok, I like this one. Rock on!
Lastly, “There’s so many different versions of the comic books, they’ve sort of bonded quite a few of them to form this particular story, but it’s all very true to the original stuff.” Huh? What? You lost me there, Chris.
Exactly how can something have many different versions yet stay true to the original? That’s like telling your wife you didn’t mean to sleep with her sister. It just happened.
If Chris was running for public office he’d never win. Fortunately for us, and the sanctity of America, he is simply playing Thor. Now, I’m not trying to downplay the importance of playing Thor, but I think Chris is a young man who was definitely unprepared to answer any questions.
I don’t always believe actors when they say they read everything about a character, especially if it’s based on a comic book character. I particularly don’t think this applies to Chris. The statement about the many different versions of the story sounds like something he took from a production/cast meeting. Nonetheless, I am still excited about the Thor movie. Of all the things I took from this interview, I also picked up on Chris’s calm demeanor. This tells me the shoot is going well. It could also mean he knows absolutely nothing about Thor or making movies, but I’ll give him credit.
Nobody likes to be put on the spot. Actors and other celebs have this happen as much as politicians, so they feel the need to answer all questions. I think Chris’s statements make me anymore or any less excited about Thor. In essence, he did no damage even if he made no sense.
