Taking a Look at Coloring Challenge #19

We’ve been SO lucky to get all the amazing artists that we have for the Coloring Challenges…and I’m happy to tell you that Challenge #19 is NO exception.

3!ll’s piece is great. It lends itself really well to being able to practice things like creating depth and motion while keeping things like mood and pacing to the forefront of the colorists’ mind.  It is time now to take a look at some of the awesome submission up through now.

The first post for Challenge #19 was by Bucket!

Bucket! did a great job on this piece. Overall I like his color choices and his rendering.  One thing to keep in mind when coloring…as a rule warm colors (yellows, reds and oranges) have a tendency to move toward the viewer while cool colors (whites, and blues) have the tendency to move away from the viewer.  While I enjoy the individual character renders on panel 1, watch out for such a cool pallet choice on the foreground characters while maintaining such a warm pallet on the background character.  This gets confusing to the eye and pulls you out of the story.

Great job though Bucket!  Keep on working and you’re going to see TONS of improvement. You’re on the right track!!

Our next submission was from one of the regulars on the site, Aconic. After his first post of this page he got some feedback from Brian that it would benefit from some rim lighting and teh addition of some atmosphere.  This is Aconic’s second post of the image baring Brian’s comments in mind.

Aconic produced some great work here.  The colors are bright and fresh which creates a fun feeling on the page (even WITH the dude bursting out of that monster’s brain case).  The attention to the details in the background buildings is particularly nice.  I also think his rendering of the folds the the female lead’s clothing is nice.  I know that can be difficult, especially for someone without a lot of experience with it.

Some of the comments posted by 3!ll about the piece as a while is that the colors lack a stark amount of contrast.  The lightest highlights are somewhere in the midtone range.  I have to agree here.  The lighting on the page as a whole could be punched up and it would really finish out the piece.

Excellent work Aconic.  You should be proud of that one!!  Keep the pages coming!

I want to remind everyone that teh Coloring Challenges are never taken down which means you can access ALL 19 official challenges AND the handful of other fun projects that we’ve posted in the Pixel Shrine on www.huedoo.com.  We keep the 5 most current challenges pinned to the top of the list, but you can always go back in the history of the thread to find the older ones.  You’re going to find some AMAZING art from people like artist of the acclaimed Gearhead and the upcoming Suicide Sisters, Kevin Mellon (www.kevinmellon.blogspot.com), artist whoe is everywhere from the Clone Wars series on StarWars.com to the art on the cover of the new Strathmore and Bristol papers packaging, Katie Cook (www.katiecandraw.com), DC artist extraordinaire and author of “DC Comics Guide to Digitally Drawing Comics” (found on Amazon here: http://tinyurl.com/djzfwt ) Freddie Williams II (www.freddieart.com), prolific artist (and one of my favorites!) Andrew Charipar (www.misfitcorner.blogspot.com), Marvel artist David Nakayama (www.davidnakayama.com) and many MANY more!!

Also…stay tuned for the BIG Coloring Challenge #20 which is coming up next week!! It has to be one of my favorite pieces of art that we’ve had yet in the Coloring Challenge series. I’m a huge nerd for the artist so I can’t wait to get that baby up!!  Don’t miss it!!!

Thanks again for sticking with me through another week.  Until next time, stay colorful!!
