Creating Ourselves CRAZY!!!

Tribal Council — By on October 11, 2009 8:00 PM

It’s been a little while since I’ve posted my article here in the Tribal Council and for that…I apologize.  You were supposed to have 24 hours of blogging and streaming video from me last weekend during the 24 Hour Comic Book event but unfortunately there were issue with our internet connection.  Since you all couldn’t be there with me, let me give you the run down of what happened.  We all met at Krypton Comics in Omaha, Nebraska at noon on the 3rd of October.  There were 8 of us that started out and by noon the next day…there were still 7 of us.  This is my 3rd year attending the event and if you have never tried it or know what its about…here’s a little synopsis.  You have 24 hours to create a 24 page comic book. That’s from conception through writing, pencils, inks and lettering.  It’s a maddening and grueling experience…but it forces you to really dig deep into your creative well.  The books are seldom amazing and a lot of time the end product is less than coherent but every project, completed or not is a true accomplishment of stamina, creativity, will power and caffeine.  Of our group of 7 that made it through the night completely only 1 person finished all 24 pages.  Neal Obermeyer, cartoonist from Lincoln Nebraska, whipped out an unbelievable 24 pages of story.  You can go see his work on his website at www.nealo.com I completed the pencils on all 24…and in fact due to my soggy brain I accidentally did 25 pages. Woops!  But I lettered all 25 and got through inks on 10 pages.  It was a little disappointing to me for not finishing like I did last year…but I think my end product turned out good.  I’m happy with it.  I plan on finishing the inks on the remaining 15 pages of inks soon.  When I do I’ll post the whole story.  I encourage everyone who’s interested in art and or comics to at some point give this event a try.  You’ll be sleepy…but you won’t regret it!

Newly posted this week on HueDoo.com is another fantastic piece of art in a HiFi Coloring Challenge!!  This time around we have a piece by Eisner nominee, Steve Bryant.  His body of work includes Athena Voltaire, Ursula Wilde, 24: Cold Winters and the upcoming Canterville Ghost. Steve out did himself with this Roketeer piece for us and I can’t wait to see some colored pieces to start getting posted!!!  Major thanks to Steve for this.  Look for a short interview with him right here in the Tribal Council next week. Get over to http://www.thecomicforums.com/forum2//index.php?showtopic=160888 right now to download the line art and start coloring today!

The Pixel shrine has been a busy place recently. We’ve had a massive list of colored pages being posted.  Thank you to everyone who’s posting art. It’s a real thrill to me to see our community thriving through your creativity and hard work. Thank you Thank you Thank you.

Just yesterday rcoffman posted this super sexy Judge Anderson. Wow! What can I say?  Beautiful work. He asked for crits & comments…so please be sure to stop by and let him know what you think.

Just in time for Halloween…Tribal Council regular Kevin Conley posted some classic monster pieces…Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman!!!  My favorites!!  Kevin is working lately with a process where he applies the HiFi techniques over top of a photo.  It’s a cool effect and I’m a fan.  Nice work Kevin!! Keep ‘em coming!!

Also up recently is a Katie Cook piece that was posted WAY back in June of 2008.  Aconic posted his take on it.  Nice work!!!  Don’t forget everyone…every coloring challenge that we’ve ever posted is STILL up and available for download.  Please take advantage of this.  It’s a great way not only to become a better colorist…but also to build some nice portfolio pieces with some truly professional quality art work.

Well that’s it for now!  Check back this week for more! Thanks for reading!
