Terry Moore Talks About New Echo Movie
Screen Gems — By AltoidMan on September 28, 2009 at 12:11 PMHe sounds like somebody who gets it. It was recently announced Terry Moore’s latest title Echo will be made into a movie. By all accounts this is a huge shift in popularity for Moore. If he wasn’t already known to the masses, that is about to change.
Moore himself understands what is at stake. When asked a series of questions about the upcoming movie, Moore sounded like somebody who is pushing all his chips in the middle. He knows his hand is solid, but still is leaving factors up to chance and it may end up costing him. Still, who wouldn’t be excited to see one of their creations on the big screen? Moore is cautiously optimistic and it shows. Here is the Q & A directly from Moore himself.
1. What is your reaction to Echo being made into a movie?
TM: Cautious. I don’t have any control over anything that happens, or even if it happens. It’s up to a hundred people in L.A. to convince themselves this is just a marvelous way to spend the next few months of their lives. The obstacles are convincing, the economy sucks, life is short… all that. And yet, somehow movies do get made from time to time. So, I’m potentially, cautiously, semi-excited.
2. How did the deal get started? Were you approached or did you network your way into talking to execs?
TM: I have a good agent. He did that voodoo thing he does.
3. What is your role in the movie-making process? Are you going to write it, oversee it, or do you have no role? How do you feel about having/not having a role?
TM: That’s still being sorted out, but the talk is to have me involved. I would be happy to contribute whatever I can.
4. Do you have any idea who they are looking to cast as the lead characters? Director?
TM: No.
5. If time, space, and history were not a factor, who would you like to see cast in Echo?
TM: I probably shouldn’t say now, because I don’t want whoever gets the roles to read I wanted someone else.
6.What is your biggest concern about making Echo into a movie?
TM: My biggest fear is a bad movie; spending the rest of my life with a stomach ache every time I see it collecting dust in Blockbuster. I would do everything I could to keep that from happening.
7. Any plans for Strangers in Paradise to be made into a movie? (Sorry, it’s my favorite title. I’m wishing and hoping.)
TM: No. SiP should be a TV series. That’s the direction I’m pushing for it.
8. What is your general thought about comic book titles being made into movies?
TM: Some comics translate well, others don’t. You have to be honest about it. Or smart. Or both. Both would be useful. Luck won’t help on this one.
I couldn’t agree with Moore if it were my own creation being considered. I think he is very wise to be cautious. I am satisfied with his answer about comics being made into movies. Let’s hope he can influence the movie enough to stay true to Echo.

I read this interview and am reminded of the recent season premier of The Simpsons about turning the Everyman comic into a movie. So much can go disastrously wrong. Terry Moore generally figures out the best people to work with so hopefully the people he entrust with Echo will be good stewards and bring a great version to the big screen. Fingers crossed.
