Coloring Challenge #16: Hulking out with Tommy Patterson

Tribal Council — By Eric White on August 27, 2009 at 3:02 AM

This week on www.huedoo.com in the Pixel Shrine we’ve posted a new coloring challenge! Our exciting 16th challenge is featuring art from Tommy Patterson, artist on Boom Studio’s FarScape. He hooked us up with an amazing image of the Hulk.  I got a chance to talk to Tommy and find out a little more about him.

Tribal Council: I always start all my interviews with this tough question, whats your favorite color and why?

Tommy Patterson: Green! With purple not far behind.

TC: What got you into comics?

TP: I loved Superman movies when I was little, i loved drawing and one day I saw the cover to X-Force #2 and KaPow! Bought a sketch pad and that was that.

TC: For the folks out there that may not be familiar with your work, tell us a little bit about you and your body of work.

TP: I’ve been lurking for a while. I was WAS an underachiever. Then I had someone hit the right buttons and challenge me. I finally divorced myself from video games.

TC: How did you come to work on Farscape?

TP: I fought tooth and nail for it. My rep sent them samples and they asked if I would try out for it. They liked my work but Henson Co were iffy. I kept sending them refined headshots and they caved in.

TC: How does color effect your work?

TP: It shows how much I need to learn. Coloring shows that I really need to study lighting better. I also over render but you don’t know where to pull back until you see it colored.

TC: Do you have a favorite style of coloring?

TP: 90’s liquid! love the candy look. I love Joe Chiodo’s work on Wildcats too. He does those awesome orange and yellow rim lights.

TC: Have you ever finished a page, sent it off, seen the finished colored pages and  thought the outcome was terrible?

TP: YES! But it was all on me.

TC: Do you have any other projects coming up in the near future?

TP: Not as of yet but I’ll have something soon. I refuse to take no for an answer.

BIG thanks to Tommy for donating some art for us to color and for taking a few minutes out to let us get to know him a bit.  Be sure to jump on over to www.huedoo.com and check out the HiFi Coloring Challenge #16.  Download the image, color it up and repost it! Or, if you’re not ready to color a page yet, I encourage you comment and critique and of the art that’s posted.  We’ve fostered a fully supportive and educational community of aspiring and working colorists on the site. We’d love to have you join in the fun.

You can find FarScape on sale now at www.boom-studios.net and Tommy’s original pages for sale on Cadence Comic Art.

Also this week on HueDoo we’re welcoming all the new Tribe members from Estrella Mountain Community College’s Photoshop for Comics class.  Class kicked off on Tuesday and it always exciting to see so many new faces on the forums.  I can’t wait to see some colored pages start to get posted!! Brian and Krity are great teachers so they can all look forward to a great semester!

And the last order of business for today…I’ve gotten a load of great comments and emails about my 2 part Crash Course in Flatting.  It’s great to know that there’s so much interest out there for flatting.  Thank you for all your great feed back and comments!

That’s it for this time around in the Tribal Council. Be sure to stop in next week. We’ll be spotlighting colored art that has been posted on the forums!
