Let the Tribal Council Come to Order!!

Tribal Council — By Eric White on July 21, 2009 at 2:44 PM

With a deep crash, the massive gong brings the Hue Doo Tribal Council to order!!

We’re happy to have you with us, but you may be asking, “What is this Hi-Fi that you speak of?” “Whos a HueDoo?” “What the heck are you talking about?”  Well let me tell you.

For over ten years now Hi-Fi Colour Design has been producing digital color, illustration and other creative services to the comic book and entertainment industries. Hi-Fi has collaborated with every major publisher, syndicate, toy company, and entertainment company worldwide. Hi-Fi is best known for their work in comic books with a major focus on digital coloring but in 2008 Hi-Fi produced an amazing and wildly successful book called “Hi-Fi Color for Comics”.

Behind Hi-Fi Colour Design are two great people that I’ve been fortunate enough to get to know over the last year or so, Brian and Kristy Miller.  Brian has been coloring and painting since childhood.  After discovering Macintosh and experimenting with comic coloring in his teens Brian went on study at Southwest Missouri State University. There he also met his future wife, Kristy.  After college they both went worked in the “real world” for a while (Brian in advertising and Kristy as a middle school teacher history & Macintosh teacher) but in 1998 they took the plunge and began Hi-Fi Colour Design.   Kristy handles the day-to-day, non artistic sides of Hi-Fi. For fun she teaches anthropology and history at a community college as well as playing a MEAN game of tennis. Brian enjoys coloring and creating fully painted covers and pin-ups for comics, books and magazine covers. He gets away by taking his motorcycle on rides into the middle of nowhere in Arizona, where Brian and Kristy call home.

Hi-Fi Colour Design and Hi-Fi Color for Comics have spawned a community of colorists and creators called HueDoo.com.

The Tribe, as we are affectionately called, is all about teaching, learning and displaying your work.  Weather you are someone who just is curious about the process of coloring, an aspiring professional colorist or anything in between HueDoo is the place for you.  We discuss all things color and comics.  All questions are fielded surrounding coloring techniques, abilities, Hi-Fi Color for comics, art, photoshop, computers…you name it.  You’ll also find our regular HiFi Coloring Challenge series where we provide you with a piece of high resolution, professional quality artwork for you to put your coloring skills to the test.  Then you can post the images back to the site for comments, constructive critiques and general admiration!  The series has been fortunate enough to get some amazing artwork over the last year from such names as (and here’s where I name drop a little bit!) Freddie Williams II, Brent Schoonover, David Nakayama, Katie Cook, Andrew Charipar, Kevin Mellon, Jun Bob Kim, Dave Wachter…and so many more.  It’s REALLY a great thing and we encourage EVERYONE to join us there.

So what does the Hue Doo Tribal Council have to do with all that madness?  This is the place where you can come each week to get the scoop on what’s happening on the site.  Find out what’s been posted. Who’s working on what. When new Coloring Challenges are posted you’ll see them here first. This weekly column will be THE source for all things HueDoo.  I’ll also use this space to highlight creators on the sight.  I’ll show you some of their art and maybe get a little coloring chat out of them.  And because I’m writing this thing you’ll also see some of my work here as you follow with me through my adventures in comics.

I’ve ran through a whole pile of information here about who, what and where Hi-Fi & HueDoo are all about.  But there is one last question floating around that I’m certain you just are DYING to know about? Who is this guy writing this column!? Well allow myself to introduce…myself.  My name is Eric White (GeekyWhiteGuy on the forums) and I wear a LOT of hats. At home I’m daddy to my two wonderful girls; Willow (4) and London (9 months) along with my wife of ten years, Candise.  I work professionally as a graphic designer and moonlight as a comic book flatter. I’m also an aspiring comic book creator (penciler, inker, letterer, writer & of course colorist).  Even though I make a part of my living in comics…I hesitate to call myself a full fledge comic creator because I have SO far to go before I’m really any good at any portion of the comic book creation process.  That’s really my whole motivation to be involved with the WHOLE Hi-Fi/HueDoo/writing adventure…education. Yours AND mine.

I encourage you sign up at HueDoo.com (even if you don’t have the book) search around the forums and get to know everyone.  Also check back here each week for news, information and art from HueDoo.com.  Thanks for reading and I’ll talk to you soon!
