A Big Week for Color & Comics!!

Tribal Council — By on July 21, 2009 2:56 PM

Welcome to the second edition of the HueDoo Tribal Council. If you’re joining us again, thanks for coming back!! If you’re a new reader, I’m glad you found us and I hope you get a little something out of this column and come back often to check out our updates!

This is an exciting week for comic fans! The Mecca of cons, San Diego Comic Con, is this week.  The guests and creators lists are amazing again this year! I’m not so lucky to be able to make it out west this year but HiFi is there in force again!  If you’re going (or are already there) be sure to seek out Brian & Kristy.  You’ll be able to find them at either the World Famous Comics Booth (4918)or the Impact Books Booth (1415) and at two separate panels. Friday from 3 to 4 Brian will be sitting in on Impact University in room 30CDE and Saturday look for the grand finale of the whole show (then again…we might be a bit bias) from Digital Color Styles & FX in Room 30CDE.  In this panel Brian and Kristy will demonstrate digital color styles for superhero, alternative, manga, and web comics. You’ll learn tips, tricks, and techniques for creating stunning digital color and special effects. Plus a behind-the-scenes look at Hi-Fi’s upcoming projects!  Find out all the particulars and see a full list of the HiFi SDCC schedule at www.hifidesign.com

This week on HueDoo.com (in the pixel shrine) we’re unveiling a new Coloring Challenge!  Our 15th challenge is presenting art by Michael Schwartz from his hit webcomic, Oceanverse!  Oceanverse chronicles the adventures of Clayton Hemmings and his crew aboard the Red Herring, a submarine in search of the mysteries of the sea. It updates every Monday and Thursday. I’ve been following this strip since its premier in September of 2008. Everything about this strip is awesome. If you like action, comedy, adventure and/or the ocean…you’ll love this web comic. Follow it today at www.oceanverse.com

Through the course of our Coloring Challenges we’ve have some amazing artwork. This is not different. Michael knocks it out of the park every week with this classic style and crisp humor.  This time around you’ll have a chance to color one full week’s worth of strips. I’m really excited to see how these turn out. This is officially our first sea monster in Challenge. Does it get much better than sea monsters!?!

We’ll be looking for a clean flow in the coloring across the two strips. Make sure your colors and rendering look like they work together across both. Of course you’ll first have to decide…color it with a modern style or a classic 50′s & 60′s type of style.  Be sure to look for an interview here at the Tribal Council with Michael Schwartz this week about Oceanverse and how color effects his art and work.  Please check out the Coloring Challenge here!

Just a few notes to wrap us up today, forum friend RHughes posted a massive thread of colored images. Be sure to check that out.  He’s amazing.  Find it here.  You can find a lot more of RHughes‘ work at his DA page here.

My fellow Nebraskan (and twitter pal) Jennie (jk! on the forums) posted three version of a Wonder Woman (drawn by her husband Anthony).  They’re 3 great takes on a fun drawing. Check it out here and go visit Jennie’s super fun blog site here.

So that’s it for today. Thanks for stopping by!  Be sure to check back often for more from the HueDoo.com and the HueDoo Tribal Council!

  1. Yay for colorists! This is very cool and I can’t wait to work on the new coloring challenge. Thanks for the shout-out and for all the encouragement you’ve given me as I’ve expanded my artistic expression of color and form from fiber to digital art!
